Heli Austria Sprengmasten

Am Freitag den 21 August blickten viele Touristen, die auf dem Weg über die Tauernautobahn nach Italien waren, und am Rastplatz Tauernalm direkt vor dem Tauerntunnel Pause machten, plötzlich interessiert neben die Autobahn, wo ein roter Hubschrauber schwebte. Hintergrund war ein Auftrag der ASFINAG, dem österreichischen Autobahnbetreiber, für die Heli Austria etliche Masten auf einen nahegelegenen Berg zu fliegen hatte. Für diesen Einsatz kam eine Bell 212HP zum Einsatz, deren Klang aufgrund des Rotors mit zwei breiten Blättern einen hohen Wiederkennungswert hat.

Heli Austria ist ein österreichischer Hubschrauber-Betreiber, der zahlreiche Dienstleistungen anbietet – angefangen vom normalen Transport von Passagieren über jedwede Art von Lastentransport, Montage, Waldbau und Holzfäller Arbeiten sowie Feuerlöscheinsätzen. Die Flotte deckt dabei das volle Spektrum von kleinen, mittleren und großen Hubschraubern ab, von Airbus Helicopters H125, 130, 135, 145, MD Helicopters MD-900, Bell 212 und 412 bis zu Airbus Helicopter Super Pumas. Die für diesen Einsatz verwendete Bell 212HP wurde 1975 gebaut und war zuvor bei der Polizei Dubai und der Agarflug Helilift GmbH im Einsatz, bevor sie von der Heli Austria gekauft wurde und dort seit Mai 2013 im Einsatz steht.

Heli Austria is an Austrian helicopter operator, providing a wide range of helicopter related services – from pure people transport to any kind of goods and equipment transport, assembly, lodging and firefighting service. Their fleet includes small, medium and large helicopters, from Airbus Helicopters H125, 130, 135 and 145, MD Helicopters MD-900, Bell 212s and 412s to Airbus Helicopter Super Pumas. The Bell 212HP used for this mission was built in 1975 and in operation with the Dubai Police and Agrarflug Helilift GmbH until acquired and in operation with Heli Austria since May 2013.

Der Vertrag mit der ASFINAG an diesem heißen August Tag sah den Transport und die Montage von Mastteilen auf einem Berg neben dem tiefen Flachau Tal vor. Diese Masten waren sogenannte Sprengmasten, welche an Punkten mit besonderer Lawinengefahr aufgestellt werden. Auf den Masten werden dann Behälter angebracht welche mit kleinen Sprengladungen bestückt sind, die an einem Seil hängen und ferngesteuert ausgestoßen werden können. Sinn des Ganzen ist es Explosionen knapp über der Schneedecke auszulösen und so Lawinen kontrolliert abgehen lassen zu können um Schäden an Straßen und Dörfern vermeiden zu können. An der betreffenden Stelle ist insbesondere die Autobahn in Gefahr, da das Tal hier relativ schmal und die Hänge sehr steil sind. Daher wurden die Teile für insgesamt drei Masten auf den Berg Benzegg auf der westlichen Seite des Tals geflogen und dort montiert.

The contract for the mission with ASFINAG on this hot August day required the assembly of some specific poles up the mountain in the deep Flachau valley. These poles (in German there is the specific name “Lawinensprengmast”, word by word translated as “avalanche explosion pole”) are built at locations with a high risk of avalanches. The poles are then fitted with boxes filled with small explosive charges attached to a rope, which can be ejected remotely. Whole purpose is to explode the charges shortly above the snow surface and thus launch avalanches in a controlled way, to avoid damage to roads and villages. In the precise location the motorway is in high risk, as the valley is narrow and the slopes are very steep. Thus, the parts for overall three of these poles had to be transported up to the mountain Benzegg on the western side of the Flachau valley and built up there.

Wie üblich war das Service Fahrzeug mit Treibstoff und weiterer Ausrüstung (Sicherheitsequipment, Taue, Lastengurte, …) bereits vor dem Hubschrauber eingetroffen. Das Team bereitete das Lastseil und die andere Ausrüstung vor und installierte auch die Gurte an den Masten, um ein schnelles Einhängen an den Hubschrauber zu ermöglichen sobald der Flugbetrieb startete. Nachdem die Bell 212HP angekommen war, mussten zuerst etliche Monteure auf den Berg geflogen werden, da dort die Masten ja auch montiert werden mussten. Des Weiteren wurde einiges Baumaterial (von den Mast-Fundamenten) vom Berg transportiert. Danach wurden die Mastteile eines nach dem anderen hinaufgeflogen – und die Masten dort aufgestellt. Der Aufnahmepunkt befand sich auf einem Baustellengelände direkt neben der erhöht liegenden Autobahnraststätte – daher sahen die Touristen den Hubschrauber nicht über sich, sondern auf Augenhöhe etwa 200m entfernt, was ihr Interesse und auch unseres noch erhöhte, da es gute Fotos ermöglichte. Nachdem alle Transportflüge beendet waren brachte der Hubschrauber die Montagecrew wieder ins Tal und flog danach direkt zum nächsten Einsatz in der Nähe weiter.

As usual the service truck with fuel and further required equipment (safety equipment, ropes, loops, …) arrived before the helicopter. The team prepared ropes and other equipment and installed as well the loops to the pole parts, to ensure quick hook up with the helicopter once the flying operation started. After the Bell 212HP had arrived, first several people had to be flown up to the mountain to perform the assembly up there. Some construction material remains (from the pole foundations) were transported down from the mountain as well. Afterwards, the pole parts were flown one after the other upwards – and the poles set-up there. The pick-up area in the valley was on a flat construction area directly next to the elevated motorway service station – thus the tourists saw the helicopter not above them – but more or less on their level hovering approximately 200m away from them, which of course added to their but as well our interest, as it allowed good photos. After all the transport flights were done, the helicopter picked up the assembly crew and brought them down from the mountain. Directly afterwards, the helicopter continued to another mission close by.
