Heli Austria Windmessturm

Jeder Tourist, der auf dem Weg in den Urlaub in Italien, Slowenien oder Kroatien mit dem Auto oder Wohnmobil die Tauernautobahn benutzt, fährt von Salzburg Richtung Süden ins Pongau und erreicht dann durch das immer enger werdende Flachautal den quer liegenden massiven und hohen Gebirgszug der Radstädter Tauern. Die Touristen nutzen zur Unterquerung den seit 2011 mit zwei Tunneln ausgestatteten Tauerntunnel unter diesem in Ost-West Richtung verlaufenden Höhenzug und setzen dann die Fahrt in den sonnigen Süden fort.

Any tourist on the way to Italy, Slovenia or Croatia using the Tauern motorway by car or camper drives from Salzburg southbound through the region Pongau and finally reaches through the Flachau valley, which gets narrower and narrower, the mountain chain of Radstädter Tauern which closes the valley. To cross this mountain chain, the tourist use the Tauern tunnel, which is equipped since 2011 with two separate tunnel tubes and after crossing this east-west oriented mountain range they continue their way south, looking for the sun.

Dieser große Gebirgszug ist aber aufgrund seiner Lage (sowohl aus geographischer Sicht als auch aufgrund der weiten Entfernung von Siedlungen sowie der bereits verlaufenden Starkstromleitung) schon länger als hervorragende Lage für eine Windkraftanlage im Gespräch. Allerdings ist für jeden Betreiber bei solchen Projekten eine sorgfältige Abschätzung hinsichtlich Wirtschaftlichkeit und aus genehmigungstechnischer Sicht eine aufwendige Prüfung nötig (vor allem im Hinblick auf den Umweltschutz). Um die notwendigen Daten sowohl in Bezug auf die nutzbaren Windstärken als auch in Bezug auf den Vogelzug zu generieren, ließ der Landesenergieversorger Salzburg AG dazu einen Windmessturm auf dem Windsfeld in ca. 2.000m Höhe errichten.

Due to its location this large mountain range is since years identified as a potential area for windmills (due to geographic location, its distance from villages and a close-by power line). Any such project though has to be carefully evaluated by the planning teams to balance economic benefit and effort for creation (from a planning and approval point of view, especially environmental concerns). To create necessary data with regards to available winds but as well movement of birds, the energy provider Salzburg AG erected a wind measurement tower in an area known as Windsfeld in a height of approximately 2.000 meters above sea level.

Der Turm besteht aus insgesamt 10 Teilen von 10 Metern Länge und damit einer Gesamthöhe von 100 Metern, der zur Absicherung mehrfach abgespannt wurde. Die Windmessanlagen sind dann an verschiedenen Auslegern angebracht (mit Abstand zum Mast um die Ergebnisse nicht zu verfälschen), die den Betreibern über einen Zeitraum von ein bis zwei Jahren die notwendigen Daten generieren, um die Wirtschaftlichkeit des Projektes einschätzen zu können. Zudem wurden mehrere Spezialkameras installiert, die erlauben die Vogelzugrouten zu untersuchen und diesen Aspekt in die weiteren Planungen einzubeziehen.

This tower is made up of 10 parts with a length of 10 meters each summing up to a total height of 100 meters, roped several times to secure it. The wind measurement equipment is installed on several booms (but always with a certain distance to the tower to avoid any measurement falsification) and will provide the company over a period of two years with the necessary data to allow evaluation of economics of the project. In addition, several specific cameras have been installed to analyse bird movement and thereby integrate this point of concern in the planning.

Die Errichtung dieser Anlage zeigte dabei den Aufwand, der für den Bau jedweder Anlage im Hochalpinen Umfeld nötig ist. Sobald wie in diesem Fall keine Straßen oder Wege vorhanden sind, können nur entsprechend geländegängige Baumaschinen eingesetzt werden. In diesem Fall kam ein Schreitbagger zum Einsatz, der eigenständig den Berg hinauffuhr. Aber die Baumaschine selbst ist nur die eine Seite des Aufwands. Für die Errichtung des Messturms musste sowohl die Ausrüstung für die Bohrmaßnahmen im Fels als auch die Materialien für den Bau des Fundaments auf den Berg gebracht werden. Dies waren ein Bohrhammer für den Bagger sowie eine Bohrlafette, verschiedene Schaufeln für den Bagger, zahlreiches Baumaterial für das Fundament des Turms – und natürlich sämtliche Betriebsstoffe für den Bagger (Diesel) sowie die Bohrung (Wasser).

The set-up of such an installation demonstrates the efforts for the construction of any project in high alpine environments. As soon as there are no roads or paths like in this case, you can only use specific all terrain capable construction machines. For this project a so-called walking excavator was used, which drove up the mountain on its own. But this machine itself is only part of the effort. To construct the tower, it was furthermore required to transport all materials for the foundations and all additional construction equipment. These have been a hammer drill for the excavator, a drill rig, various excavator buckets, construction material for the foundation of the tower – and of course all supplies for the excavator (diesel) and the drilling (water).

Die notwendigen Transporte für den Bau sowie die Montagen der Teile des Turms wurden von den Teams der Heli Austria unter Verwendung verschiedener Hubschrauber realisiert. Bei der Montage des Turms aus den 10 Metern Einzelstücken kam eine H125 zum Einsatz. Wir konnten den Transport von Baumaterial zur Baustelle mit einer Bell212HP beobachten. Das Baumaterial wurde am nächstgelegenen Ort unterhalb des Windsfelds im Talgrund des Flachautals abgeladen, da dieser Punkt noch mit dem LKW erreichbar ist. Von diesem Punkt auf ca. 1.800 Meter Höhe erfolgt dann der Transport mit der rot lackierten Maschine OE-XKK der Heli Austria auf das Windsfeld.

The transports for the construction and the assembly of the tower from its pieces were managed by a team from Heli Austria using different types of helicopters. For the assembly of the tower from its 10 meter pieces the choice was a H125. We could document the transport of construction material to the construction site with a Bell212HP. The material was transported as close as possible to Windsfeld at the end of the Flachau valley – the last location reachable by road with a truck. From this spot at an elevation of approximately 1.800 meters above sea level, the transport to Windsfeld was performed using the red painted airframe of Heli Austria with registration OE-XKK.

Außerdem war sehr gut die Herangehensweise erkennbar – der Pilot mit Händen und Füßen an den Pedalen und Sticks, gleichzeitig mit dem Kopf nach links unten durch das Bubble-Fenster blickend um das Seil für das Einhängen der Lasten durch die Bodencrews in optimale Position zu bringen. Nach dem Einhängen erfolgte der Abflug über einen Geröllhang in südöstlicher Richtung hinauf zum Bauplatz. Bei den Rückflügen zum Aufnahmeplatz baute der Pilot den Höhenunterschied über mehrere Kurven ab, welche uns weitere tolle Fotos ermöglichten.

Furthermore, this allowed good visibility of the procedures – the pilot flying the helicopter with its hand and feet while at the same time looking downwards through the bubble window on his left side to position the rope for the hang up of the loads by the ground crew. Once connected, the pilot departed the area across a gravel slope in south easterly direction climbing in height to the construction site. On return to the pick-up location the pilot managed the descent with several turns, enabling us nice photo opportunities.
