Poseidon's Rage 2022
Im Juli 2022 richtete das 115 Combat Wing in Souda, Griechenland zum zweiten Mal die Übung Poseidons Rage aus. An diesem Manöver partizipierten neben der gastgebenden Griechischen Luftwaffe auch die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika als Teilnehmer im Bestreben, die Übung in Zukunft jährlich zu veranstalten.
In July 2022 Poseidon’s Rage exercise was held for the second time in 115 Combat Wing, Souda, Greece. The exercise was being hosted by the Hellenic Air Force with the United States of America as participating nation and the hope to become an annual event.
Die Basis Souda, die gleichzeitig auch als internationaler Flughafen Chania genutzt wird, befindet sich im westlichen Teil Kretas auf der Akrotiri Halbinsel. Der Flugplatz verfügt über zwei Start- und Landebahnen und ist das zu Hause des 115 Combat Wing, welches mit zwei Staffeln F-16 Fighting Falcons operiert.
Souda Air Base, also in operation for civilian use as Chania International Airport, is located in the west of Crete on the Akrotiri peninsula. The airfield is equipped with two runways and home to the two squadrons of 115 Combat Wing flying with F-16 Fighting Falcons.
Poseidons Rage 22 war das erste Deployment eines USAF Kampfflugzeugs der fünften Generation, in diesem Fall der F-35A, nach Griechenland. Im Detail waren folgende fliegende Einheiten beteiligt:
• HAF 340 Squadron “Fox”
• HAF 343 Squadron “Star”
beide ausgerüstet mit F-16 Block 52+ und stationiert in Souda,
• USAF 494th Fighter Squadron “Panthers” mit F-15E Strike Eagle (14x)
• USAF 495th Fighter Squadron “Valkyries” mit F-35A Lightning II (10x)
beide zu Besuch vom 48th Fighter Wing aus RAF Lakenheath, UK.
Zusätzlich nahmen noch Einheiten der Griechischen Luftverteidigungssysteme in Kreta, Einheiten der Griechischen Marine und JTACs des Special Warfare Commands der Griechischen Streitkräfte teil.
Poseidon’s Rage 22 marked the first official deployment of a USAF’s 5th generation fighter, in this case the F-35A, to Greece. More specifically, the flying participants were:
• HAF 340 Squadron “Fox”
• HAF 343 Squadron “Star”
both equipped with F-16 Blk 52+ and based in Souda,
• USAF 494th Fighter Squadron “Panthers” with F-15E Strike Eagle (14x)
• USAF 495th Fighter Squadron “Valkyries” with F-35A Lightning II (10x)
both visiting from 48th Fighter Wing based in RAF Lakenheath, UK.
In addition, Hellenic Air Defense Systems units in Crete, Hellenic Naval Units and JTAC Elements of the Special Warfare Command of the Hellenic Armed Forces were also participating.
Die Übung konzentrierte sich auf die Partnerschaft zwischen der US Luftwaffe und der Griechischen Luftwaffe, um die Verlege-Möglichkeiten der F-35 und der F-15E zu verifizieren und war der erste Besuch der F-35 auf der Basis in Souda. Die Trainingsziele waren:
• Flüge zur Eingewöhnung
• Flüge zur Schlung von einfachen Verteidigungsmanövern
• Luftkampf Training zwischen unterschiedlichen Flugzeugtypen
• Luftkrieg
• Tiefflugangriff mit simuliertem Angriff auf Überwasserziele
• Joint Tactical Air Controller – JTAC Missionen
• Offensive Unterstützung von Marine Einheiten
• Scharfes Schießen auf Schießplätzen
The exercise focused on the partnership between the USAF and Hellenic Air Force in order to validate F-35 and F-15E deployment capabilities and was the first iteration to feature the F-35 at Souda AB. The objectives were:
• Familiarization flights
• Basic Defense Maneuver flights
• Combat training between different types of aircraft
• Air Combat
• Low Altitude Shipping with Virtual Attacks of Surface Targets
• Joint Tactical Air Controller – JTAC missions
• Offense – Support Naval Forces
• Live firing at the shooting ranges
