Heli Days 2018

Am Wochenende vom 7.-9. September 2018 fanden bereits zum neunten Mal die HeliDays Austria statt. Das Event hat sich über die Jahre zu einem Fixpunkt im Kalender der deutschsprachigen Helikopter-Szene entwickelt. Gleichzeitig ist es inzwischen auch das größte Helikopter-Meeting in Europa. Dieses Jahr besuchten mehr als 60 Hubschrauber aus verschiedensten Ländern das Show-Gelände in Oberösterreich. Ein besonderes Kennzeichen ist die Mischung aus Airshow, kollegialem und freundschaftlichen „get together“ sowie Fachvorträgen die an allen drei Tagen um die 30.000 Besucher an den Traunsee lockte. Erstmalig wurde von Ohlsdorf geflogen, einer Ortschaft im Salzkammergut nahe des Traunsees und knappe 50 Kilometer von Salzburg am Nordrand der Alpen gelegen. Die Vielfältigkeit des Events in Verbindung mit dem Standort sorgte zum einen für einen professionellen Rahmen. Gleichzeitig war aber auch der Event Charakter spürbar ohne aber als riesige Massenveranstaltung wahrgenommen zu werden – strukturiert und abwechslungsreich – aber entspannt.

The weekend September 9th 2018 saw the ninth edition of the HeliDays Austria. The event developed over the years to one of the main checkpoints in the calendar of the German speaking helicopter community. At the same time, it is in the meantime the biggest helicopter meeting in Europe. This year more than 60 helicopters from different countries visited the show area in upper Austria. A special characteristic is the mixture of airshow, friendly get together in combination with professional presentations and speeches which attracted around 30.000 visitors to the Traun lake. For the first time Ohlsdorf was used as a show location, a town in the area Salzkammergut close to the lake Traun and approximately 50 kilometres from Salzburg on the northern perimeter of the Alps. The diversity of the show in combination with the location created on the one hand a professional environment. At the same time, it felt as a special event without being a mass event – structured and varied – but relaxed.

Organisator und Veranstalter des internationalen Helikopter-Forums ist Pilot Daniel Ebner, unterstützt von Wolf-Dietrich Tesar, ehemaliger Fluglehrer bei der Austrian Air Force (Bundesheer). Daniel kam wie viele Piloten über familiäre Beziehungen zur Hubschrauber Fliegerei – sein Vater ist Obmann der Bergrettung. Durch die Zeit und Erfahrungen beim Militär während der Ausbildung kam ihm die Idee die gesamte Szene, Piloten, Betreiber und Hersteller, besser zu vernetzen um allen eine Möglichkeit zu schaffen Kontakte zu knüpfen und z.B. als junger Pilot bereits während der Ausbildung mögliche Arbeitgeber kennen zu lernen. Durch intensives persönliches Engagement und Durchhaltevermögen sowie viele Unterstützer wie Wolf-Dietrich hat er die HeliDays nach und nach zu dem geformt was sie heute sind. Wie er im Interview erklärte möchte er sich aber nicht auf dem Erreichten ausruhen sondern in Zukunft vor allem noch mehr Hersteller integrieren um eine Art kleine Heli-Expo zu schaffen (Heli-Expo ist die weltgrößte Hubschrauber Messe die jährlich an wechselnden Standorten in den USA stattfindet).

Organiser and presenter of the international helicopter forum is pilot Daniel Ebner, supported by Wolf-Dietrich Tesar, former flight instructor of the Austrian Air Force (Bundesheer). Daniel was brought in contact with aviation like many others – through the family. His father is commander of a mountain rescue force unit. During the time in the military and the education there he identified the need to connect the whole community – pilots, companies and producers – to enable them to make contact, network and allow especially young pilots to make connections to potential employers. Through a lot of stamina and personal engagement in combination with many supporters like Wolf-Dietrich he formed the HeliDays to the event they are today. As he explained during the interview he doesn’t want to stop there and relax on the current situation – instead he wants to grow further and integrate especially the helicopter producers better and create a kind of small Heli-Expo (Heli-Expo is the world largest helicopter fair taking place annually at changing locations in the US).

Während der öffentlichen Tage werden vor Augen der zehntausenden Besuchern Flugvorführungen durchgeführt. Wie viele andere Aussteller auf der Messe ist der ÖAMTC seit etlichen Jahren regelmäßiger Gast auf den HeliDays. Die Organisation möchte damit einem breiten Publikum ihre Aufgaben und Leistungen präsentieren und mit der Öffentlichkeit in Kontakt treten. Dies ist eine weitere Maßnahme der Öffentlichkeitsarbeit – parallel dazu sind die gelben EC135T2 Hubschrauber des ÖAMTC derzeit auch „Star“ der Fernsehserie „Die Bergretter“ im deutschsprachigen Fernsehen. In den ersten Jahren begrenzte sich die Teilnahme des ÖAMTC noch auf die Ausstellung eines Hubschraubers, inzwischen werden auch Einsatzszenarien wie Taubergungen demonstriert. Pilot Cpt. Robert Schornsteiner verwies dabei auch auf die aus seiner Sicht herausragende Stellung der HeliDays in der gesamten Region in Mitteleuropa, die es der Hubschrauber-Szene erlaubt sich zu treffen, neue Modelle zu sehen und sich auszutauschen.

During the public days a flying program is done for the ten thousand spectators. As many other exhibitors the ÖAMTC (Austrian Automobile and Touring Club) is since several years a regular visitor on the HeliDays. The organisation wants to present the tasks and activities to a wide public and get in contact with them. These adds to the various other activities of their public relations – we should mention specifically the appearance of the yellow EC135T2 helicopters of the ÖAMTC as “star” in the TV Show “Die Bergretter / The Mountain Rescuers”. In the first years the participation of the ÖAMTC was limited to the static presentation of a helicopter, now demonstrations include activities and scenarios from the normal service like a rescue by rope. Pilot Cpt. Robert Schornsteiner mentioned the very specific and outstanding position of the HeliDays in the whole region of Middle Europe which allows the helicopter community to meet, see new models and exchange.

Aus dem privaten und unternehmerischen Bereich war Heli Austria – mit einem Super Puma, einem Bell 212, einem AS350 Ecureil und einem EC135 zu Gast. Neben der vielfältigen Flotte des größten Helikopter-Betreiber in der Region („the alpine giant“) waren zahlreiche weitere Maschinen zu bestaunen. Dies umfasste sowohl Turbinen- als auch Kolbenmotor-Hubschrauber verschiedenster Hersteller und deckte ein breites Spektrum von leichten bis zu mittleren Maschinen ab. Auch der Hersteller Bell nutzte die Möglichkeit sein neues Modell Bell 505 potentiellen Betreibern und Piloten zu präsentieren und war von dieser zusätzlichen Kontaktmöglichkeit mit der Deutsch sprachigen Helikopter-Szene positiv überrascht. John Castorena von Bell Helicopter meinte „wir sind glücklich und aufgeregt zugleich um unseren neuen Helikopter zu präsentieren und uns mit der Community in Europa zu vernetzen.“

From the private company sector Heli Austria was present with one Super Puma, a Bell 212, an AS350 Ecureil and an EC135. Next to the varied fleet of the largest helicopter company in the region (labelled “the alpine giant”) various other aircraft could be admired. This encompassed on the one hand turbine powered aircraft but on the other hand as well piston engine helicopters from different producers and covered a diverse spectrum from light till medium airframes. In addition, the helicopter producer Bell used the opportunity to present his new model Bell 505 to potential customers and pilots and was pleasantly surprised and excited to have another opportunity to meet the German helicopter community. John Castorena from Bell Helicopter mentioned that “we are happy and excited at the same time to have the opportunity to present our new helicopter and connect us with the community in Europe”.

Neben dem öffentlichen und kommerziellen Bereich war auch die historische Szene vertreten. Die legendäre, englische Bristol 171 Sycamore – der derzeitig einzige auf der Welt zugelassene flugfähige Hubschrauber dieses Typs – besuchte am Sonntag mit dem Chefpiloten der Flying Bulls Sigi „Blackie“ Schwarz, die HeliDays. Neben diesem „Oldtimer“ fanden sich etliche weitere historisch bedeutende Typen ein – so die lange im deutschen Militär verwendete Bo105 mit ihrem revolutionären gelenklosen Rotorkopf System. Zwischenzeitlich waren bis zu vier Bo105 vor Ort. Mit einigen Bell 47 Maschinen bzw. Lizenzbauten waren auch Vertreter der aller ersten Serienmäßig hergestellten Hubschrauber im Boden und in der Luft zu bestaunen.

Next to the public and commercial sector as well the historic scene was present. The legendary English Bristol 171 Sycamore – the currently only flyable helicopter of this type on the world – visited the HeliDays on Sunday piloted by the Flying Bulls chief pilot Sigi “Blackie” Schwarz. Next to this iconic airframe various other historical relevant types arrived on scene – as an example the Bo105 with the revolutionary hingeless rotor which was used for quite a long time by the German military. At one moment four of these helicopters where present in Ohlsdorf. In addition, several Bell 47 or licence productions joined the event and were admired on the ground and in the air – examples of one of the first helicopters built in serious production.

Um neben den Enthusiasten, die sich für historische Hubschrauber und technische Details begeistern, auch das breite Publikum ansprechen zu können wurden während des gesamten Veranstaltungszeitraumes Helikopter-Rundflüge mit verschiedensten Typen durchgeführt – ein Angebot das zahlreich in Anspruch genommen wurde. Auch für die Fachbesucher und Helikopter-Community war es wie die Jahre davor eine gelungene Veranstaltung.
