Bavarian Tigers in the Snow
Als häufiger Besucher des Flugplatzes Zell bei Neuburg und des dortigen Taktischen Luftwaffengeschwaders 74, den Bavarian Tigers, sind viele Fotos entstanden – bei Start- und Landung, bei Flugrichtung Osten und Westen, bei Nacht, in der Dämmerung im Winter, in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Geschwader auch auf der Last Chance oder am Shelter. Ein Motiv ist mir aber erst im Frühjahr letzten Jahres gelungen – die Bavarian Tigers im Schnee!
As frequent visitor on the fences of the airfield at Zell close to Neuburg and the Luftwaffe Tactical Air Force Wing 74, I could make many many photos – during take-off and landing, with flight operations in east or west orientation, at night, during sunset in winter, in collaboration with the wing as well on the Last Chance or at the shelters. One option I managed only last year in spring – the Bavarian Tigers with snow.
Im Februar 2021 ergab sich die seltene Möglichkeit – Wochentag (also mit Flugbetrieb), ausreichend Schnee und Sonne. Vor allem die letzten beiden Wettersituationen sind in Kombination nicht allzu häufig anzutreffen – entweder es ist nur kalt ohne Schnee – oder es hat Schnee, dann ist aber der Himmel oft grau. An diesem Freitagvormittag passte aber beides – etwa zehn Zentimeter Schnee hatten die Umgebung Neuburgs in ein glänzendes Weiß getaucht und die Sonne lachte vom Himmel.
In February 2021 this rare opportunity was finally there – a week day (e.g. with flying operations) AND snow AND sun. Especially these two lastly mentioned weather parameters are rarely present together – it is either cold without snow – or you have snow and a sky in various shades of grey. On this Friday morning everything came together – approximately 10 centimetres of snow covering the area of Neuburg in shiny white powder and a relatively bright sun in the sky.
Natürlich sind die Motive an sich nicht großartig veränderbar, die Eurofighter rollen auf den geräumten Rollwegen zum Start, Landen nach dem Trainingsflug und rollen zurück in die Shelter – der grundsätzliche Ablauf bleibt gleich. Aber eine geschlossene Schneedecke hat für den Fotografen mehrere interessante Effekte zur Folge. Zum einen wird das Licht viel stärker reflektiert, was besonders deutlich bei der Landung kurz vor dem Aufsetzen sichtbar wird: die Flugzeuge sind von unten indirekt „beleuchtet“. Zum anderen ergeben sich ganz andere Kontraste der Flugzeuge zum Hintergrund – alles hebt sich viel deutlicher ab.
Obviously the perspectives don’t change and cannot be varied, the Eurofighters taxi on the ploughed taxiways to take-off, land after their training mission and taxi back to the shelter areas – this general set-up doesn’t change. But the landscape covered in snow results in some changed key parameters with regard to photography. First of all, the light is reflected much stronger from the ground, which is visible on the aircraft shortly before they land: they are indirectly “illuminated” from the ground. Furthermore, the contrast of the aircraft towards the background is completely different – they are raised in a much more visible way.
Daher nutzte ich sehr gerne die Möglichkeit, die Eurofighter der Bavarian Tigers einmal in anderer „Kulisse“ fotografieren zu können. Insgesamt 5 Maschinen waren an diesem Tag im Flugbetrieb am Vormittag und starten in einer Zweier und einer Dreier-Gruppe zu ihren Trainingseinsätzen. Sowohl das Rollen zur Last Chance als auch der Start- und die Landung ergaben zahlreiche schöne Bilder von den „Bavarian Tigers im Schnee“.

Consequently, we immediately jumped on the opportunity of photographing the Eurofighters of the Bavarian Tigers in completely different visual “set-up”. Overall 5 airframes operated on this Friday morning and took off as a three-ship and a two-ship for their training missions. During the taxiing towards Last Chance and then for take-off but as well during landing we could make many nice photos of the “Bavarian Tigers in the snow”.
