Exercise Castle Forge - US Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles at Larissa, Greece
From October 7th 2021 to November 16th 2021 the multinational exercise “Castle Forge” took place in Europe. For this occasion, the USAF 336th Fighter Squadron “Rocketeers”, 4th Fighter Wing led a deployment of overall fifteen Boeing F-15E Strike Eagles from their homebase in Seymour Johnson, NC, USA to Larissa Air Base in Greece. The long transit from continental US included a stopover in RAF Lakenheath, UK, homebase of the 48th fighter wing, which operates F-15E Strike Eagles as well. The final leg to Larissa, homebase of the Hellenic Air Force 110 Combat Wing, was then accomplished by the Seymour Johnson Strike Eagles, relying on three Boeing KC-135s tanker aircraft.
Vom 7. Oktober bis 16. November 2021 fand die multinationale Übung „Castle Forge“ in Europa statt. Im Rahmen dieses Manövers verlegten insgesamt 15 F-15E Strike Eagles von der 336th Fighter Squadron „Rocketeers“, 4th Fighter Wing der US Air Force von ihrer Heimatbasis Seymour Johnson in North Caroline, USA auf die Luftwaffenbasis Larissa in Griechenland. Der lange Flug beinhaltete einen Aufenthalt in RAF Lakenheath, Großbritannien, Heimatbasis des 48th Fighter Wing, welche ebenfalls mit F-15E Strike Eagles operiert. Der Weiterflug der Seymour Johnson Strike Eagles nach Larissa, der Heimatbasis der 110 Combat Wing der Griechischen Luftwaffe, wurde dann von drei KC-135 Tankflugzeugen unterstützt.
The exercise itself, led by U.S. Air Forces Europe-Air Forces Africa, aimed to train the quick deployment of forces to forward locations while at the same time providing a dynamic training environment together with NATO allies in the Black Sea region. For the US Air Force, a key training element is Agile Combat Employment (ACE), aiming to provide a more agile, deterrent and resilient application of air power in a contested environment.
Die Übung unter der Leitung der U.S. Air Forces Europe-Air Forces Africa sollte die schnelle Verlegung von Einheiten auf vorgeschobene Basen simulieren und gleichzeitig eine dynamische Trainingsmöglichkeit mit den NATO Partnern in der Schwarzmeer Region bereitstellen. Für die US Air Force war ein wichtiges Übungsziel das Konzept des Agile Combat Employment (ACE), mit dem die Ausübung von Luftmacht in einem umstrittenen Gebiet reaktiver, abschreckender und robuster umgesetzt werden soll.
The deployment of the Strike Eagles included several missions along with the Hellenic Air Force, but as well with other countries. Twice five aircraft were re-deployed for one week to Borcea AB (Romania) and Graf Ignatievo AB (Bulgaria), where they completed air operations with their Black Sea Allies.

Die Verlegung der Strike Eagles beinhaltet etliche Übungs-Missionen zusammen mit der griechischen Luftwaffe, aber auch mit anderen Ländern. Jeweils für eine Woche wurden in diesem Zusammenhang fünf Maschinen zur Basis Borcea (Rumänien) und zur Basis Graf Ignatievo (Bulgarien) verlegt, von wo aus gemeinsame Trainings-Flüge mit diesen Alliierten am Schwarzen Meer durchgeführt wurden.
